All the jobs!

Whenever I would get frustrated by the lack of results I’ve had in the past three months of job hunting, my friends would always attribute to it being summertime and everyone being on vacation. They promised that the interviews would come after or near Labor Day. They were right. I’ve been on two interviews since Labor Day and have turned down three others.

Why did I turn down three others? Because I got a job offer! It was my first interview after Labor Day and I just hit it off with my interviewers. I felt at ease during the interview and just got a really good vibe from them. The feeling was mutual, according to them. After hearing good things about me from my references, I was offered the position. Continue reading

Unemployment limbo

It’s been about three months since several of my coworkers and I were let go in what I like to refer to as The Reaping. Because it’s summertime and what seems like everyone – but us – is on vacation, jobhunting’s been rough I’ve been applying to at least two places each week and have only garnered interest from two places. One yielded an actual interview and the other was a misunderstanding that eventually led to a cancelled phone interview.

The interview seemed to have gone well. I felt like I had a good and easygoing rapport with the first lady I interviewed with, who would’ve become my boss. And, I felt like I answered all the questions that the second interviewer asked to the best of my ability. But, it’s been almost three weeks and I haven’t heard back, so I’m assuming that they’ve gone with another candidate. It’s a very difficult thing to know that you’ve done your best and that you have the skills for the position, but somehow they think you’re still not the right person for the job

On a weight loss journey

I used to go to the gym regularly – almost 2-3 times per week. I would wake up around 4.45 AM to get ready for the gym, and then spend 30-45 minutes circuit training. I never looked forward to it, but I knew I needed to do it to keep up with my eating. After a very cold and long winter, I gave up on the gym. I just couldn’t motivate myself to wake up that early to go to the gym anymore. And, then came on the weight Now, I had to figure out to lose two years worth of inactivity.

I knew I hated working out and dieting, so I needed to find another way. In April, after years of price-watching Fitbit on my Amazon Wish List, I finally bit the bullet and bought a Fitbit One. Because Fitbit’s food database wasn’t very big, I signed up for MyFitnessPal, too, and synced it with my Fitbit. I knew that it would eventually become a lifestyle change, so I started out slowly. I started out with a weight loss goal of 0.5 lbs per week and a goal to lose 15 lbs. Continue reading

The Reaping

After the owner of our company was charged with fraud by the SEC and our former CEO and CFO mishandling funds, our company’s financial status has been in limbo. The work atmosphere has been tension-filled for a month because nobody knew what was going to happen. Were we going to come in to the building one day and our key cards would stop working because we’ve shut down? Were they going to let us go one-by-one? Will we be sold to another company? Upper management kept us in the dark and tried to make it seem like everything was okay, even though everyone had a feeling it wasn’t.

Then, word spread that they laid off the part-time sourcing assistant on Wednesday. The next day they laid off the part-time apparel developer and a full-time sales associate. Everyone felt like something big was going to go down today. There were whispers: “I have a bad feeling about Friday. Be ready.”

And, they were right. Before the morning was over, almost 50% of the building was gone. It was surreal. I had prepared myself for it for days leading up to it, but it just didn’t sink in right away. I hugged a lot of people – all while trying not to cry. This was the first job I’ve had where I actually liked my coworkers and my boss

St. Patrick’s Day potluck

Our HR lady decided to do a green food potluck and invited people in the company to participate. Pretty good spread, I think. I made the cucumbers stuffed with Old Bay crab on the left. My favorites were the pesto ravioli, and the ice cream Jell-o squares.
